Project   Homo Europeanus – Overcoming the ,,Knowlenge Deficit”

Topic of 1. Public Agora:    Global & European Dimension in the Education

08.03.2016 Faculty of Education Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia

Within the frame of Homo Europeanus project we had quite an unusual lecture held by Johanna Lampinen from Finland. Johanna with her 20 years of experience gives lectures at University of Oulu and she focuses on global education. During the lecture, we all could see and feel her self-confidence and very positive attitude thanks to which everyone became curious about her speech. She gave us much information about how to be a good teacher and what qualities a good teacher should have. She was asking questions and giving us clues so that we could find out the correct answer on our own. Johanna included several examples from her foreign teaching experience. She was teaching not only in her hometown, but also in Africa or Asia. Such experience gave her chance to see different cultures; the way they learn and perceive actual global problems. One of the examples she gave us from teaching in Africa was about drama lessons. Johanna could see via drama activities various attitudes of children towards teachers. It was really interesting to hear. Apart from discussion and lecture we also played game connected with several global problems. We were divided into two groups and we had to agree on the most alarming one. It was not easy to agree but this was also the purpose – to lead dialogues and make decisions together. During the whole time we all could see Johanna´s active and very zealous attitude towards global problems edification. It was truly motivating and encouraging lecture.

16.03.2016   Faculty of Education Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia

On this event we had a session with one of the members of Slovak parliament Ľuboš Blaho who has studied at our university. It was obvious that he enjoyed the time back at the school where he spent few years of his life. We were discussing Slovak presidency of the Council of European Union in the second half of 2016. He highlighted the importance of this presidency and what it means for us as members of European Union. We had extraordinary chance to meet one of the members of parliament so it would be great if we had more space to ask questions and discuss also various topics.

Topic Public Agora 3:   Slovakia’s Awareness of the EU

22.03.2016  European Information Center,  Bratislava,  Slovakia

Thanks to the project Homo Europeanus we had a chance to visit House of Europe in Bratislava which represents European Union in the Slovak republic. At this unusual meeting the functioning of different institutions of European Union were introduced to us. We had great opportunity to lead fruitful discussion with one of the representatives of the House of European Union. All the questions we asked were answered and we found out much interesting information. However, the questions might have been answered more thoroughly. Anyway we liked the discussion and we really appreciate that we had a chance to visit this place. When we consider the fact that in this time European Union faces many difficulties it is important to strengthen the awareness of all activities and project the European Union does.

Evaluation:

  • Participants profile: university students & departments staff
  • Location: Bratislava, European Information Centre
  • Methodology: lecture and discussion
  • Evaluation: The lecture was good but the discussion could have been better.
  • Conclusions and recommendations: The event was good but the lecturer´s answers to the participants´ questions could have been more thorough.
